Mike Wall is a bald, impoverished and unpublished orphan, third child of mixed-sex marriage, who soon discovered he was different from the other girls in his class. He has blagged his way through life with a mixture of humour and cowardice, surviving only because he has chosen his friends wisely and had the ability to look busy whilst in fact being a qualified sloth. He lives on a narrowboat on the Grand Union Canal but can’t remember why.
